Our Work
Health Workforce New Zealand provides leadership, co-ordination and oversight of planning and development of the workforce across the country’s health and disability sector.
Established in late 2009, our annual plan sets out a range of initiatives designed to recruit, retain and develop the workforce in all specialities and in all areas, ensuring that we have the right mix and numbers of people to provide world-class healthcare.
We are building on work programmes already underway, such as reviewing the support and education provided for junior doctors, as well as focusing on new areas such as increasing staffing capacity in primary and community care.
We have developed prioritisation criteria and methodology which are used in all HWNZ activities and are based on a number of health domains (PDF, 96.88KB) which respond to government health targets and priorities.
We will ensure that the right systems and process are in place to plan New Zealand’s health workforce effectively as well as explore and trial new roles and new ways of working to ensure we can keep pace with new demands and innovations both nationally and internationally.
